Why is the USA Refusing to Share Info with Argentina?

Updated: Aug 11

Senator Ernst wants to know why the Biden administration has refused to provide Argentine law enforcement officials with information confirming links of the Iranian crew of Emtrasur to terrorist activities.

Ernst wants to know if the reason for the delay is due to the White House's interest in pushing through a nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The U.S. Department of Justice may possess key information about the five Iranian crewmen being held in Argentina linked to the case of the cargo plane of the Venezuelan company Emtrasur,

"The Joe Biden administration suspiciously ignores requests made by Argentine justice, including under treaty obligations between the two countries."

Warns Senator Joni Ernst in a letter sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

In the letter, Senator Ernst says that " these Iranians with direct ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard terrorist organization were detained in Argentina early last month. The Biden administration has refused to provide Argentine law enforcement officials with information confirming links to terrorist activities."

The apparent stalemate in the Biden administration prompted R-Lowa Senator Joni Ernst to call for an explanation for the delay and

"If the failure to confirm terrorist ties to a major U.S. ally outside NATO, could be due to the continued, desperate, and deeply misguided pursuit of a nuclear deal with Iran."

In the letter Senator Ernst sent to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, she demands a justification for the Justice Department's "unusual delay and lack of response" to formal requests from the Argentine judiciary for key information for its investigation into Iranian suspects who are part of the crew of the Venezuelan-flagged Iranian plane Emtrasur.

Ernst claims that the delay "suggests a prioritization of other parts of this administration's agenda, such as negotiations on a new Iranian nuclear deal."

"If it turns out that President Biden's Justice Department is deliberately delaying and ignoring requests from the Argentine judiciary to conduct its investigation, even in the face of treaty obligations, all to prioritize the administration's desperate and misguided pursuit of a new nuclear deal with Iran, it would be a disgrace and completely unacceptable."

Ernst warned that immediate assurances are needed that vital information will be provided to Argentine authorities investigating the case of the Iranian crew arrested in Argentina, along with a full explanation for the delay."

The case of the airplane

On June 6, 2022, a plane owned by Emtrasur Cargo (Venezuela) landed in Argentina with a crew that included five Iranians, with at least one member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Upon inspection, Argentine federal police discovered that the plane's cargo contained intelligence technologies and related military hardware, providing credible suspicion of malign activities related to cyber and intelligence operations.

In addition, the pilot of this aircraft, Gholamreza Ghasmei, is the CEO of Qeshm Fars Air, an Iranian airline sanctioned by the US Treasury Department.

The IRGC, a designated foreign terrorist organization, uses Fars Air airliners to smuggle weapons, raising questions about Ghasmei's possible involvement in delivering lethal materials that support the efforts of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards-Qods Force in the Latin American region. As a result of the investigations, the Government of Argentina stopped the plane by court order and is currently withholding the passports of passengers and crew.

The Argentine judiciary, through a standard process called the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) program, requested information from the Justice Department about the possible participation of the plane and its crew in support of international terrorism for two months without the Joe Biden administration having complied with what was agreed by the agreement.

In addition to Senator Erns the letter to Attorney General Garland is signed by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-lowa), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.).
