In a pre-sentencing report, the US Department of Justice requested a light sentence, considering that Colonel Aispuro pleaded guilty to three counts and agreed to hand over a portion of the money that originated from the sale of drugs and other criminal activities.
Emma Coronel Aispuro was arrested in February 2021 at Dulles International Airport outside of Washington. In June 2021, she pleaded guilty to three crimes against her without having to face trial: 1) conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin and marijuana; 2) money laundering and 3) participation in property transactions belonging to a drug trafficker.
The petition made by the prosecutors to the court included that Colonel Aispuro be sentenced to five years of supervised release and a payment of 1.5 million dollars.
Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most notorious drug trafficking groups in Mexico.
